  Superintendent, Warren County Career Center

As the Warren County Career Center enters 2008, we look forward to new programs in adult education and new programs for high school students beginning next fall. Our focus continues to be on providing our youth and adults with the academic knowledge and career technical skills and competencies they need to enter, compete and advance in their chosen careers.

The Adult Education Full Service Center is offering two new programs for 2008 that are in high demand in the job market: Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning Technology (HVAC) and Electrical Lineman Mechanic. New WCCC Adult Education Director Tom Harris has been researching local, state and national career trends in order to offer training that will prepare WCCC students for immediate employment.

Electrical linework is a high-paying trade that offers many career paths that provide challenges along with significant financial rewards. WCCC’s Electrical Lineman Mechanic program is an intensified nine-month fundamental training program that is designed for men and women who want to pursue a career in linework. Classes are set to begin in early spring 2008. Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Cooling systems (HVAC) careers provide many different job opportunities. There is a constant demand for the design, installation, and service of climate control systems. New HVAC systems are constantly being developed, creating new jobs and opportunities for HVAC specialists. The HVAC program is planned to begin by fall 2008.

New program offerings for high school students will include Environmental Controls (HVAC) and Biotechnology. Enrollment for next year is going on now.

The Gateway to Success program, a collaboration with Miami University Middletown, will enable youth and young adults who have not completed high school and have been out for at least one year, to return to school and earn a high school diploma. Subject matter is delivered online and in a classroom setting which is located at Miami Middletown’s campus. Students who complete their high school requirements will be more comfortable in a college setting and should be ready to go on for post-secondary education.

Exercise Science is our first satellite program at Franklin High School. Students in 9th and 10th grade enroll in a foundations program and as junior and senior students will develop workforce competencies in the areas of fitness, personal and athletic training and sports medicine. The lab is located at the high school but students will also have the opportunity to utilize the new athletic facilities in the future.

In another partnership with Miami University Middletown, we are offering a dual credit senior English program at the career center this school year. Students in the class must have scored at a specific level on the COMPASS (the entry level test required at MUM) and submitted writing samples that were reviewed by the staff at MUM.

Community Safe is a new communications tool, which will allow us to call or email parents, students and staff members to notify them of school events, news and any emergency situations that might come up.

Our master planning process continues as we plan for the future to provide both the quality and amount of space needed to prepare youth and adults for careers and continuing education. The board recently approved a resolution for us to move forward with this process utilizing the architectural design firm of Steed Hammond Paul. We will be asking for input from the community at every step of this process, as we have from the beginning.

The partnerships we have established with business and industry continue to benefit our students by ensuring that they are receiving training in the latest technology and are preparing for careers that are in demand right here in Warren County as well as around the world. Our fall Business Advisory Kickoff brought hundreds of business people in for advisory meetings and a special program with speakers Sara Arseneau, director of the Lebanon Area Chamber of Commerce, Ohio Rep. Shannon Jones, and Gertrud Flaig, a representative from U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt’s office.

As positive as last year was, we are excited to move forward into the future. We can now say that we have served Warren County for 30 years. We appreciate the community’s continued support and value our relationships with our partner school districts: Franklin; Lebanon; Kings; Springboro; Little Miami and Waynesville. We understand and look forward to the challenges we face related to continued growth, improved quality and outstanding student performance. The Warren County Career Center is committed to creating a future of opportunities for each of our students.
